Open Airways for Schools

Open Airways for Schools
(OAFS) is an a school-based program designed to help 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 5th graders who have asthma. It is an entertaining, easy-to-use program that can make a real difference in the lives of kids who have asthma.

The goals of this program are to (1) empower young asthmatics by teaching them how to prevent asthma attacks and emergencies; and (2) help schools control asthma by creating partnerships in asthma care with school personnel, health care professionals, volunteers, parents and other family members. Through this program, children with asthma learn they can turn to adults both at school and at home to help them manage their asthma. This ultimately helps make it possible for them to reduce the number of schools days they miss due to asthma, to perform better in school, and to lead healthier lives.

How the program works
Open Airways for Schools consists of six 40-minute group lesions that are held during the school day. The curriculum uses an interactive teaching approach - group discussion, stories, games, and role playing - to promote children's active involvement as they learn. Classroom kits consist of easy-to-use teaching materials, including parent and child handouts, posters and puppets.

The brightly colored posters that come in the classroom kit are keyed with various program topics so the OAFS facilitator can easily see which lesson they go with. The basic topics covered in each of the six sessions are:
Lesson 1: Basic Information/Feelings About Asthma
Lesson 2: Recognizing and Managing Asthma Symptoms
Lesson 3: Solving Problems with Medicines/Deciding How Bad                 Symptoms Are
Lesson 4: Finding and Controlling Asthma Triggers
Lesson 5: Keeping Your Battery Charged: How to Get Enough                 Exercise
Lesson 6: Doing Well at School

In addition to the six lessons, take-home assignments are given to children to complete with their parents. This helps increase family communication about asthma and encourages children to rehearse the new skills they're learning at home.

The program is designed to be led by a facilitator. Facilitators may have a health care background, but this is not necessary. Quite often, facilitators are concerned parents or other volunteers who simply have an interest in helping reduce the negative impact of asthma on children. We periodically offer optional group training programs for those interested in becoming an OAFS facilitator, but the program is designed to be so "user friendly" that formalized training really isn't necessary. Our staff can work one-on-one with potential facilitators to prepare them to lead the program.
