Asthma Awareness Project Targets Preschoolers

The American Lung Association and Children's Television Workshop have teamed up to launch "Sesame Street A is for Asthma."

This program is a childhood asthma awareness project for children ages 3 to 6. It's goals are to increase awareness of childhood asthma, and to provide support for families and caregivers.

To date, more than 50,000 bilingual educational kits have been distributed to child-care providers, health care providers, public health organizations, and community-based organizations, and local Lung Associations across the country. The kits contain a Sesame Street video, a caregiver's guidebook, and a colorful Sesame Street poster.

The video features the popular Sesame Street characters Elmo, Rosita, and Luis, plus a new Muppet named Dani, who suffers from asthma. As they sing, dance and talk with each others, the characters impart important information about the symptoms of asthma and its effects on children. The characters talk about Dani's asthma and how to help someone who has trouble breathing during an asthma attack.

The guidebook contains helpful asthma awareness information, plus activities for child care providers. It also provides take-home activities that can be completed by families.

The ALA of Kentucky is interested in partnering with medical, educational, and community organizations in Kentucky who would like to implement the "Sesame Street A is for Asthma" project in areas throughout the state. A is for Asthma kits are available free to day care centers or other interested facilities in Kentucky thanks to a grant from the Prudential Foundation. If you are an individual, day care provider, or other interested party from anywhere in Kentucky, you may obtain more information on receiving a free A is for Asthma kit by calling 1-800-LUNG-USA or sending an e-mail to Mike Kuntz at mikek@kylung.org.
